As of March 4th 2024, prices for draw.io for Jira and Confluence Cloud and Data Center will be increasing.

These increases will allow us to invest in features that push the boundaries of diagramming. For example, we brought in collaborative whiteboarding alongside our classic diagrams editor, giving users a whole new canvas to work with. More recently, we released our exclusive AI-assisted diagramming: Smart Templates, empowering users to generate diagrams based on the input they give.

These feature developments all serve to modernize and improve the diagramming experience for our users. We want to keep on building and innovating in this way to guarantee draw.io is the best it can be, and is truly deserving of its place as the #1 rated diagramming app on the Atlassian Marketplace.

It takes something special to stand out amongst the opulence of Las Vegas, but if there’s anything Team draw.io loves, it’s a challenge. We set out to make Atlassian Team ’23 our best event ever, and after a fun week of getting face to face with our customers, partners, and Atlassians, we’re feeling like we were the big winners in the Expo Hall.

Our newest feature: Smart Templates

We were really excited to show Team ’23 attendees a brand new feature, Smart Templates. We know that when it comes to building complex diagrams, our customers don’t want thousands of templates, they want the right template. The Smart Templates feature uses machine learning and AI to create editable diagrams in just seconds, all from a simple text prompt. Every user we showed this feature to was impressed, and many commented that it would save them a lot of time in their diagram creation.

Our Community Engagement Coordinator, Emily Fedor, recently produced a video demonstrating Smart Templates, check it out here:

From Smart Templates to Smart Partners

The first appearance of our new feature actually took place the day before Team kicked off, at Seibert Media’s Info Session. This event brings together Partners from across the ecosystem to learn the latest news, best practices, and tips/tricks to help their customers get the most from their Atlassian tools. At this year’s event we hosted two sessions. In the first, Mike Rink shared with Partners draw.io’s vision for building successful apps in the cloud. Then, Ashley Flanagan and Carlotta Kuhn showed Partners how to run better meetings with Confluence (and a little help from draw.io). These sessions will be posted on our YouTube channel soon!

What the F#ck is the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau?

That was the question we posted to everyone who visited our booth. And the answer is that the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau is draw.io’s mascot! This creature comes from a German phrase, which can be translated into something like “an egg laying, wool having, milk giving, bacon growing animal doesn’t really exist; you can’t get everything you want”.

We disagree! We think that our customers deserve to have it all, and that’s why we consider draw.io to be the one tool for every team. Our mascot was featured prominently in our booth artwork and our merch, and they definitely found a place in all of our hearts. We even used them as a supporting character in a Dungeon & Dragons adventure we played with attendees in our booth.

We recognize that the word might not be familiar to English speakers, but the best way to learn is by trying! So, we challenged Team ’23 attendees to pronounce the animal’s name, and you can see the hilarious results for yourself on our YouTube channel:

What’s in Store for Team ’24?

Team ’23 was special, but the draw.io team isn’t one to take things easy for too long. We’ll pause to recover, but soon we’ll start planning for our big Vegas comeback show. We are looking with excitement toward Atlassian Team ’24, once again taking place in Las Vegas next May, and we hope to see you there!

Want to stay on top of Team draw.io’s exciting adventures? Be sure to follow our social media channels so you don’t miss out.

You don’t use draw.io yet? Convince yourself and start your free 30-day evaluation today. Or book a free no-obligation demo with our customer success team to learn more about how draw.io can make life easier and more productive for you and everyone in (and outside of) your company!

You don’t have to look far to see how AI is driving innovation in the tech world, and making lives easier for software users. We’re putting machine-learning to work for our customers with draw.io’s new feature, Smart Templates, which uses AI to automatically generate custom templates quickly and easily. The Smart Templates feature is live, and any team with a Cloud license can try it out today. Want to see it for yourself? Just start a free evaluation of draw.io on the Atlassian Marketplace.

A smarter way to look at templates

Other visualization apps have taken to view diagramming templates as an arms race; the app with the most templates wins. But, that’s not how Team draw.io views things, and we don’t think that’s how our customers feel either. Teams don’t want 30,000 templates, they just want the right template.

That was the genesis for Smart Templates. Instead of adding template after template to our library, we want to give our users the fastest way possible to start diagramming. That means finding the right template faster, and what better way to achieve that than to build it instantly with the help of AI.

How it works

On the template selection screen inside draw.io for Cloud there is a now an item in the left hand menu for “Smart Template”. Clicking that will open the Smart Template screen, which has a simple text entry box, and a dropdown for choosing the kind of diagram you want.

In the text box, describe the type of diagram you want. Feel free to be as detailed as you like, because the more you add, the more the AI will be able to consider when constructing your template. You might say something like, “An emergency management flowchart for troubleshooting a power failure”, or “a swimlane diagram that describes the onboarding process of a new software engineer”. Once you’ve described your template, use the dropdown menu to select the type of diagram you want. Then, press “generate”, and allow draw.io to work its magic. In a short time, a diagram will appear in the preview window. You can choose to insert that template as-is, or you can ask draw.io to generate a new template; even keeping the parameters the same, an iteration of the template will appear.

Once you choose “Insert”, you can work with the diagram like usual, formatting colors, text, connectors etc. until you are satisfied. Was the template generated perfectly? Great! Save it as a custom template, and use it again in the future. Need to try again? No problem, you can always access the templates from the “plus” menu and generate a new template.

See it yourself at Team ’23

We are excited for users to get their hands on Smart Templates, and we’ll be demoing the feature at our booth next week at Atlassian Team ’23. Will you be in Las Vegas for the event? Be sure to stop by our booth, located near the Expo Hall entrance, to get a first-hand look. If you’re missing out on Team ’23, you can still try out these AI-driven templates yourself, even if you’re not a customer; just start a free 30-day evaluation and start building templates today.

If you could magically snap your fingers and instantly improve your team’s productivity, would you do it? Over the next quarter, our blog is going to explore how diagramming helps teams work better together, but with a twist. – our blogs will celebrate the world of magic, high fantasy and role playing games, all while we share our usual advice about diagramming. The campaign will culminate at Atlassian Team ’23, where attendees will be able to directly join Team draw.io in finishing our adventure together in a role playing game.

Drawing and diagramming, a different kind of DnD

Each week we’re going to produce a new diagramming blog themed around fantasy and adventure. Some of our content will simply be a fresh take on our usual topics with a little sword and sorcery flavor, while others will be more specific to role playing, like a blog featuring diagramming tips and tricks for Dungeon Masters.

But, we’re even more excited to share an adventure we’ve written that will play out in serialized form every two weeks. In each of these story-driven blogs we’ll post another chapter of a sprawling adventure that takes place in a faraway kingdom, and of course each one will include some fun diagramming inspiration as well. You’ll follow a group of unlikely heroes as they work together to solve a mystery, with the climax taking place at Team ’23 itself! That’s right, we’re inviting our readers to visit our booth and play DnD with us at Team ’23 to finish off this campaign.

Yes, we are nerds

Team draw.io is made up of a diverse group of people, but for many of us, gaming, fantasy, role-playing, and adventure help us connect together. We haven’t just played Dungeons and Dragons, we’re Dungeon Masters. We don’t just watch the Lord of the Rings, we watch the extended editions. We haven’t just maxed out World of Warcraft, we still read the quest text. We love this stuff, and we’re excited to share diagramming with you in this new context.

And, we know from years of talking to draw.io users that you love geeky stuff too. Heck, even Atlassian loves nerd culture, why else did they name their most popular product after a Japanese movie monster?

Start your quest today

We hope you’ll join us as we have a little more fun with diagramming, and hopefully inspire you to try some different techniques in your own visualizations. If you’re ready to join our Hellfire-esque club of diagramming demons, you can start trying draw.io today for both Confluence and Jira, just visit the Atlassian Marketplace to start your free 30-day evaluation. Can’t make it to Las Vegas for Atlassian Team ’23? Be sure to follow us on socials so you don’t miss any of the fun.

The Atlassian Marketplace is booming. Since 2018, instances have grown a whopping 99% to 1.6M. There are nearly 4000 third-party apps available on the marketplace overall, making it increasingly hard to know which apps can provide your company the most value. For example, what’s the best diagramming app?

At Blended Perspective, their Marketplace Analytic Research Service (MARS) makes them uniquely situated to help narrow your choices to the best of the best. They collect data covering all facets of the Marketplace including instances, growth, product, platform, license, price, reviews, and more. And recently, they turned their attention to diagramming.

Spoiler alert: draw.io came out on top.

The numbers

Blended Perspective’s analysis begins with some head-turning numbers that showcase draw.io’s popularity, sales, and impressive growth in the Atlassian Marketplace.

As their article points out, draw.io is the largest diagramming application on the marketplace with over 40,000 active installs. It’s also the fastest-growing. In 2021 alone, draw.io for Confluence ballooned at an impressive 10% growth rate.

Its nearest competitor’s growth rate was 2%.

Fasten your seatbelts

What’s fueling that meteoric rise? Well, one factor singled out by Blended Perspective’s research is something they like to call “Velocity.” Simply put, Velocity quantifies the frequency of new releases or app updates over a given period of time.

In their own words, “In 2020/21, Draw.io shows 45 releases, versus 11 for Gliffy. We assume this conveys investment in bug fixes and improvements and therefore in this regard Draw.io is excelling.”

Easy on the checkbook

And when it comes to price, draw.io is also the top diagramming app. draw.io’s solution for Data Center comes in slightly lower than Gliffy. But most importantly, considering the booming growth of Atlassian’s cloud platform, draw.io for Confluence Cloud is significantly cheaper than Gliffy. And that makes for massive savings for you.

The proof is in the pudding

But there are factors that are even more important to you. For example, an extensive feature set, secure handling of your data, or which solution is more intuitive and easier to learn?

Blended Perspective outlines multiple ways in which draw.io outstrips its top diagramming app competitors in terms of power features and ease of use, including:

And the list goes on…

Security

The most important question, of course, is what about security? BP’s article ends on a reassuring note for anyone concerned about the security of their valuable data.

draw.io’s cloud users, they point out, have access to all diagrams in their own instance. There’s never a need to connect to draw.io’s servers. draw.io diagrams are attachments on pages and issues, and this means that your data is only transferred between Atlassian servers and the user’s browsers.

Other solutions, however, require you to store your diagrams on their servers. That means you don’t have full control over your data. Some may even load external JavaScript sources that can call Confluence Cloud API endpoints with the same authorization as the currently logged-in user (learn more here).

What’s the takeaway?

Well, the biggest takeaway here is that you don’t have to just take our word for it. The many ways in which draw.io can make your diagramming life better, easier, and more cost-effective are easy to see for anyone who takes the time to compare.
